Currently, there are nine regional 2-1-1 organizations throughout New York State. To receive 2-1-1 designation, groups must follow these four steps:

1. Written application

  • A three-year time frame to meet all benchmarks
  • 2-1-1 designation is awarded to a regional collaboration
  • Roles of lead agency and partners are defined
  • The call center partner must be a not-for-profit operating an I&R program at the time of designation

2. Site visit
3. Approval by the 2-1-1 New York Policy Board
4. Recertification every three years

In addition, organizations must meet these requirements:

  • Adherence to national AIRS standards, including:
    • I&R service delivery
    • Resource database maintenance
    • Reports and measures
    • Cooperative relationships
    • Organizational requirements
  • Professional certification of I&R and database staff
  • 24/7 operations
  • Computerized I&R database with call tracking
  • I&R database accessible via the Internet for mutual assistance
  • Ability to measure all contacts with call center information
  • Automated call distribution
  • Teletypewriter (TTY)
  • Multi-language accessibility
  • Structured training curriculum
  • AIRS accreditation
  • Ability to publicize 2-1-1 services and educate the public
  • Ability to handle crisis calls or have a protocol with the local crisis or volunteer center
  • Ability to handle volunteer requests
